Regent

::”A Regent is a facilitator that helps members of their District”::

A Regent is the Geek.Zone member that represents a Geek.Zone District. Their chief role is to help facilitate the activities that take place in their District and liaise with the Trustees and other Regents in order to further the Geek.Zone objectives. As with all positions at Geek.Zone, Regents do everything on an entirely voluntary basis.

Regents are not “the Boss” or “in charge”. They simply help to coordinate and facilitate Geek.Zone activities when necessary. They are just humans like everyone else!

!Why “Regent”?
As with many things at Geek.Zone, we like to be a bit geeky – oddly enough! Every [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1132290/|Warehouse] has had a team of Regents who look after it from behind the scenes. All are as equal as everyone else that works at the warehouse and all care deeply for their Warehouse and strongly believe in its mission.

Similarly, our Regents are not in charge of anyone else at Geek.Zone. They are there to help facilitate the behind the scenes activities, so that events can go smoothly. Our Regents similarly care deeply about our Geek.Zone and its ((about|continuing mission)), to seek out new geeks and to boldly go… …everywhere!

!Term
Regents hold their position either;
* from the end of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) until the start of the following one, or
* from the formation of a new District until the next AGM.
The AGM is currently held on the last Saturday in November.

!Qualities
All Regents are;
* Approachable & accepting
* Kind
* A bit outgoing
* Assertive (when necessary)
* Enthusiastic
Geek.Zone is a community where everyone is equal and has no “boss”.

!Who can be a Regent
Any Geek.Zone Member can become a Regent, as long as they are enthusiastic and eager to help build our Geek.Zone!
!What is Involved
!! Point of Contact
As a Regent of a District, you are the first point of contact for new members. Some may be nervous or anxious, so it is important to be positive, gentle and encouraging.
!! Attendance
Regents must run at least one local Geek.Zone event each week. This could be a ((Pint Night)), a gaming event, or perhaps a Bowling night, anything you like. Something simple that can act as the introduction to Geek.Zone for new members, and something regular that every member can look forward to each week.
!! Community Relationships
Geek.Zone is not an insular organisation, so Regents should seek to form relationships with others in their communities. These could include;
* Other geeky groups such as University societies
* Local businesses
* Suppor or counselling services that Geek.Zone members might find helpful
Not only do these relationships “add value” to Geek.Zone membership, they help build the local community as a whole.
!! Social Media
Regents should ensure that regular updates are being posted on the social media channels for their District. It is always good when several members can post to social media, as it increases the number of available opportunities, however, it is the Regent that needs to ensure that more than one post is being published by someone each week.
!! Inter-District Communication
It is important that all Regents maintain regular communication with the other Geek.Zone Districts, as well as the HQ LDT team. Not only do the other Districts like to know what is happening in your District, but they can also help you with any challenges that you might be facing. Regents must participate in the monthly All-District LDT video call.
!! Successor
If you intend to step down at the end of your term, you should find a successor that can take over from you. This helps to mitigate the risk of a District being left without a Regent.
!! Year Commitment
You need to be willing and able to commit to all of the above for the entire 12 months of your term as Regent. Quitting before the conclusion of your the term causes considerable difficulties for other Geek.Zone members, so unless there are significant extenuating circumstances, it is not allowed. Without wanting to sound harsh or blunt, if you cannot do that, do not stand.
!What you Get
As the first point of contact in your District, you will make lots of new friends and contacts! It is a great way to expand your social circle and help to build your local community.

The Geek.Zone Trustees are also happy to give references to Regents who have successfully completed a full term. While it cannot count as an employer reference, voluntary positions still do help to improve your CV.

Primarily, however, being a Regent is all about bringing your local community together and helping a District to grow. Seeing how you have helped to transform it from what it was to what it has become is incredibly rewarding.

!How to Become a Regent
Any member can run for Regent by being nominated and seconded by Geek.Zone members. All successfully nominated members will then be asked if they wish to stand and, if they do, they will appear on the list of candidates on the annual ((election)). The members then vote and the results are announced at the ((AGM)).
